"Suppose a brother or sister is without clothes and daily food. If one of you says to him, "Go, I wish you well; keep warm and well fed but does nothing about his physical needs, what good is that?" James 2:16
WHAT WE DO?
MICRO*EMPOWER is a Christian Ministry initiative of the JHM Global Missions for empowering poor women to start small market trading, farming, local market partnerships & or assisting a group of women to start a trading cooperative.
Our approach is similar to the The Grameen Model started by started by Prof. Mohammed Yunus of Bangladesh. It is a Micro-Empowerment program focusing on the poor-focussed grassroots approach to helping people get back on their feet through being grated small started fund with which they can start a small trade, business or cooperative.
Our methodology: We identify from our community of women we already support a group of women with trade potential, skill and ability to start a trade of their choice that has a potential of suceeding by serving the local community they live in. We then use our staff/partners on the ground to access their success potential, interview them and identify their potential, as well as explain the purpose, functions, and mode of operation of MICRO*EMPOWER to them. In some cases Groups of 4-5 prospective borrowers are formed once their collective desire to form a cooperative is deemed plausible and their business plan realistic. We weigh with great care the success potential of all applicants who receives a starter capital to begin trading, with an agreed repayment plan [without interest at all].
The EMPOWERMENT starter capital recipients are well monitored, supervised and placed under a FUND MANAGER who ensures the small capital is used wisely, invested and effeted where it will yield profit and work with the recipient to achieve trading success through simple accounting & banking practices, prudent marketing & selling methods and down to earth workable format that guarantees success. Participants are expected to conform to rules of the scheme.
Only if the first two borrowers repay the starter capital [without any interest over an agreed period of say; sixteen to fifty weeks do other members of the community/group the woman came from become eligible to further Micro*Empower funds from us. We know that because of these restrictions, there is substantial group pressure, community pressure & peer pressure to keep individual records clear. In this sense , collective responsibility of the group serves as collateral and a great incentive to ensure that the first qualifiers succeed. In short they don't want to spoil for other poor women looking to get help from the project.
